Special Initiative on Media Justice

Media both shapes and responds to issues. Those who care about social justice should care about media. Whether it's making sure our stories are told accurately, or building skills and gaining access to tell them ourselves, groups that are marginalized, peoples that have no voice can utilize media tools to create progressive social change.

The report, "Colonies in Question: Supporting Indigenous Movements in the U.S. Jurisdictions," examines the legacy of colonization of the territories and freely associated states and makes links to current strategic U.S. militarization and its effects on land use, local communities, environment, health, and the economy.

Rethinking the U.S. in "Paradise"
A 1998 centennial project, directed by Nancy Aleck who is now the Hawaii People's Fund Executive Director, included this publication.

In 1898 the United States annexed the island nations of Guam, Hawaii, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines; the following year the eastern portion of Samoa became part of US territory. These actions altered the course of history for these nations and significantly impacted their cultures, sovereignty, environment, land tenure systems, and health, educational and social structures.
